You may remember reading about Gabriel Valdes in our Fall 2016 newsletter. If not, Gabriel was the very first Dorothea B. Shaw scholarship recipient. As a 2015 graduate of Mandarin High School’s AICE program, Gabriel successfully competed for the Shaw scholarship, which provides $1,500/year for four years to a Duval County student who chooses an accredited college or university in the Northeastern United States. He spent the last four years at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and recently graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Humanities concentration in Political Science. He had this to say about life now…
“Just wanted to reach out and give my thanks for all your wonderful support these past four years. The Dorothea B. Shaw Scholarship truly helped make MIT a more enriching experience and allowed me to take more risks in my studies and focus more on my academic progress rather than financing my education.”

Moving forward, Gabriel plans to stay in Boston as an associate at the Boston Consulting Group. He’s also been accepted into the deferred 2+2 program for Harvard Business School’s MBA, so he’ll be staying in the northeast for the foreseeable future!

Making it a family affair Gabriel’s sister, Daniela, applied for and received the Dorothea Shaw Scholarship in 2018 to attend Yale University. We look forward to hearing how she is enjoying her time there. If you are a past grantee/recipient, please don’t be shy about sharing your story!
